S-Lab Conference: The Effective Laboratory – Safe, Successful and Sustainable

Date Tuesday, June 12 - Wednesday, June 13, 2012
Location National Science Learning Centre, York, UK
Organizers The Safe, Successful and Sustainable Laboratories (S-Lab) Initiative

This unique two day conference will bring together all the key players involved in laboratory design, operation and use (for analysis, research and teaching/learning), including managers, users, technical support staff, facilities, designers, and equipment and service suppliers. It is based on the work of the S-Lab project in UK universities but will be of great interest to those associated with commercial and public sector laboratories, and to practitioners from outside the UK. The structure will allow each specialist group to pursue its own interests in breakout sessions, but also allow thought provoking general inputs and cross-functional discussion in plenary sessions. As well as interesting specific content, it should therefore create a more integrated and strategic understanding amongst a wider range of people about how laboratories might change in response to the financial, technical, environmental and other pressures that they currently face. The conference will also host the presentations of the new S-Lab Awards programme and it is hoped that some of the winners will present on their achievements during the two days.

Programme

The whole two days should be of general interest to anyone working in, or associated with, laboratories. However, the second day will have a greater focus on laboratories in the education sector. It will be possible to attend for just one of the two days.

The keynote sessions will have range of high profile UK and international speakers. One which is already confirmed is:

  • Lessons from University of California Laboratories: Wendell  Brase, Vice Chancellor, UC Irvine (covering amongst other topics Irvine's "Smart Lab" project which sets a 2 air change per hour target for most new or refurbished laboratories and which is a "showcase" project for President Obama's new "Better Buildings Challenge" program.

8-10 breakout sessions will also be available on each day. Proposed themes include Design; Flexibility; Lab Management; IT in Labs; Professional development of Technical Staff; Sample Storage; Fume Cupboard management; and Teaching and Learning.

The organiser

The conference will be organised by the HE funding council-supported Safe, Successful and Sustainable Laboratories (S-Lab) initiative of the HEEPI project. It also involves a collaboration with the HEFCE-funded National HE STEM programme.
